Adoption Requirements in Arizona

In Arizona, any adult may adopt a child, as long as they become certified by the court. This means that any resident age 18 or older, whether married, single, or legally separated, is eligible to petition the court. To ensure a safe and caring home for a child, anyone wishing to adopt must submit a written application, attend an adoption orientation and training, and pass an investigation and review by the court.

The court takes into consideration:

  • References and recommendations
  • Social history
  • Financial stability and outlook
  • Morals and values
  • Physical and mental health and wellness
  • History of court actions related to child abuse
  • Fingerprint-based criminal background check for all adults in the home
  • Other relevant information

If you are attempting to adopt a child who is your niece or nephew, sibling, or grandchild, you won’t need to go through the entire certification process, but the court will require you to pass the fingerprint-based criminal background check. In either case, our family attorneys in Phoenix can help you put together the necessary paperwork to give you the best chance of giving a child a home.

Securing the Best Possible Home for a Child

So much thought goes into adoption proceedings in order to protect the welfare of the child. The court aims to place children in environments that are safe, stable, and beneficial to their well-being. The Department of Child Safety (DCS) goes to great lengths to ensure that siblings stay together, that relatives or other family members are considered, that the child gets along with the potential adopter, and that the wishes of any child age 12 or older are taken into account. At Rader, Sheldon & Stoutner, PLLC, we provide you, the potential adopter, with compassionate and knowledgeable counsel throughout the process.
